This is one of the first science fiction books that I've read, and I recently rediscovered it. It concerns a young woman who wakes up to find that she is on another planet. By being in the right place at the right time, she uncovers a plot against the leaders of the planet. This humanoid race has been at war for centuries against the Mil, who take the skin off their still living victims. It is as the result of such a raid on Earth that Sara was captured by the Mil. Rescued when the ship was hit, she became a Restoree, i.e. a new skin was grafted on to her.
It is a short book, but a good one. When first written it was almost unique in having the main character as a woman. If this Sara is not a kick ass like the Sarah of the Terminator movies, neither is she a shrinking violet who passes out at the first sign of trouble.
I don't know if the book is still in print, but you should look out for it.
