At last the Buffy and Angel books have moved on! This is the first book of a 3-part crossover. Set between seasons 4 and 5 of Buffy and seasons 1 and 2 of Angel it is a tale of shadow monsters, gangbangers, vampire groupies, mysterious disappearances police corruption, monsters, murders, telekinesis and a legend of a lost race of lizard people. It is not at all apparent how these plot threads all tie together so books 2 and 3 should be interesting.
A missing person leads Willow, Buffy and Riley to LA and by the books cliffhanging end, Angel, Buffy and Riley are rolling around in a dirty alley in East LA while been threatened by corrupt cops. Mmmmmmmmmm.
Well written and thankfully free of Glory, Joyce and Dawn. Although the line: "Dawn was coming." is deliberately highlighted. Riley stalks around in his soldier-boy getup sulking over how he isn't the big cheese Initiative guy any more. Tara is all fluffy and helpless. While Anya gets some wonderfully sarky lines, Xander and Giles are utterly useless. No mention of Wolfram and Hart, yet. Thankfully this is before the dreadful Lorne character and his wretched karoke bar were vomited into existence on 'Angel'.
I like this so far. I loved the Gatekeeper trilogy and so I look forward to the rest of Unseen and the forthcoming Lost Slayer 4-book deal. With this book, both Angel and Buffy have dug themselves out of the dreadful rut of novels they've been churning out lately. Best of all not one mention of Doyle! Praise be!!!!!!!
Buy it. Read it.
