The sequel to ‘A Lady Raised High: A Novel of Anne Boleyn’. Jane Seymour is the plain daughter of minor nobility, she has no marriage prospects and her parents see her as a burden. Then a family friend arranges for her to become Lady In Waiting to Queen Catherine.
At court, Jane witness Catherine’s fall and the rise of Anne Boleyn, but then something unexpected happens. Jane captures the King’s eye and soon her brothers are pushing her forward. Jane dislikes the beautiful and cruel Anne and by sweetness and obedience sees her way to becoming Queen of England.
But marriage to the King isn’t easy and Jane must tread carefully. This is an enjoyable tale that gives one possible interpretation of Henry’s enigmatic third wife. This is an interesting version of Jane Seymour, the woman who Henry VIII died prizing above all others as his most ‘True and Loving wife’
Apart from a few irritating spelling mistakes, this is a good book. It is a shame that Gardner doesn’t seem to be writing any further books in the series.
Recommended.
