A Death In Gascony: A Musketeers Mystery

The 4th in the Musketeer series after 'Death of A Musketeer', 'The Musketeer's Seamstress' and 'The Musketeer's Apprentice'.

The mystery of each previous book has centred around a particular Musketeer. 'Death of A Musketeer' (Athos), 'The Musketeer's Seamstress' (Aramis), 'The Musketeer's Apprentice' (Porthos) and so 'A Death In Gascony' centres around D'Artagnan. The four friends journey to Gascony after D'Artagnan's father dies in mysterious circumstances. To uncover the truth behind the death they must unravel a tale of religious wars, intrigue, hidden heirs, secret marriages, mysterious pasts and evil relatives.

This book is a return to form for the series after the lacklustre 'The Musketeer's Apprentice'. However I seriously doubt that the science of blood splatter crime scene investigation had been invented during the reign of Louis XIII. Leaving aside that quibble this is an enjoyable rollicking mystery set in a long gone era featuring our heroes and strong themes of friendship and loyalty.

I am looking forward to the upcoming 5th book 'Dying by the Sword'.

Recommended.
