The Dead And The Gone

The sequel to 'Life As We Knew It'.

Alex is working in a pizza shop in New York when the world changes forever. The moon changes its orbit, changing life on Earth for the worst. With their parents presumed dead and his elder brother in the marines, Alex has to take care of his younger sisters Julie and Briana. Alex refuses to accept the fact his parents died the first night of the disaster and clings to life in their apartment in New York waiting for their return. As the siblings struggle to survive in the decaying ruins of New York, they find themselves doing things they never believed possible to live.

While 'Life As We Knew It' dealt with a comfortably middle class family in the country, this tome deals with an immigrant working class family in New York. Life in the big apple is grim as most of the city is flooded, Alex and his best friend loot the dead to find items to barter for food, Julie is preyed on by sex offenders, a baby is trampled in a food riot and Briana goes crazy.

This is a good book, a grim tale of survival against the odds. Cold, hunger and disease become part of the siblings every day life. Death is a regular occurrence and their future seems hopeless.

Highly recommended.
