01: The Beginning Of The End "I'm one of the Oceanic 6!"
"Jack should never have called those people."
"Are you insane?"
"I think it wants us to come back."
As rescue appears imminent, a division (long foreshadowed) occurs among the surviours of Oceanic Flight 815. Meanwhile flashforwards show that Hurley and Jack can't adjust to life off the island. Oddly this episode left me feeling distinctly underwhelmed. It had no oomph to it. For example 'Pilot 1&2' had me on the edge of my seat, 'Exodus 1' made me teary eyed during the raft launching scene, 'The Other 48 Days' and 'Expose' were fantastic. But this episode left me cold. I don't know why. It's rescue time and nothing.
Highlights:
Ana-Lucia's old partner Mike interrogates Hurley. Mike obviously fancied Ana-Lucia and Hurley can't say he knew her or how she died.
Hurley's interrogation room vision.
Matthew Abaddon - what or who was he?
The face in the window of Jacob's cabin.
Hurley screaming at the sight of Locke.
Vision!Charlie and his new haircut.
Rose choosing her side.
Claire choosing Locke.
Comments:
No-one saw Naomi leave? Jack never checked on her? Jack the man who nearly went insane trying to save Boone's life?
Note the drawing on the chalk board on the nuthouse.
Hurley wanders around alone in the jungle and finds Jacob's cabin. Has no-one any concept of personal safety?
How is Naomi still alive? How is she so mobile? A branch through the torso left her incapacitated for episodes yet a hunting knife in the back leaves her able to climb trees and chickfight Kate?.
Everyone stands next to the cockpit which was full of bodies when Jack, Kate and Charlie visited it in 'Pilot 1&2'. So shouldn't it reek of dead and rotting bodies? Isn't the pilot's body still rotting in a tree somewhere?
Jack never noticed the gun wasn't loaded?
Jack looks old and thin. He can still pull off his bambi eyes trick though.
How did Jack go from functioning in society and never wanting to return to the island to being a drug addled, wannabe bridge jumping, ranting like Britney Spears smackhead desperate to go back?
Whose side did Sayid pick?
Unanswered Questions:
Why is Kate so keen to leave? She's a wanted fugitive, likely to end up in a super-max prison.
What could Hurley tell the truth about?
What is the 'it' Hurley refers to?
Who were the people in Jacob's cabin?
Where is Richard?
How does Locke plan to get to The Others barracks? Maybe they turned their sonic weapon fence on! What does he plan to do when he gets there? Restart the bookclub?
Two Tribes:
Team Locke: Hurley, Claire, Aaron, Rousseau, Ben, Alex, Carl and Sawyer.
Four of the freighter people arrive on the island. They haven't come to rescue, they have come to annoy! The Lostaways don't trust the freighter people, in short the lostaways are acting like The Others now. The lostways are right to question the intentions of their supposed rescuers. It seems the freighter people are looking for natives, they are looking for Ben. Good.
Highlights:
The luggage all over the ocean floor and then the plane wreckage itself. Creepy.
The polar bear skeleton in the Tunisian desert. And its collar is engraved with the hydra hatch logo.
Sayid and Juliet getting the drop on the smug and annoying Miles and Daniel.
Comments:
Why is Juliet orange?
Why does Miles need a machine to ghost hunt?
Ben is constantly being beaten up and has had spinal surgery, yet shows no ill-effects.
The pilot's name was Seth Norris. Yet why does his photo show him with a moustache?
Would the sunken bodies really be shown on tv?
One of Mikhail's cows!
Why was Charlotte wearing a flak jacket?
Abaddon hired Naomi and her team.
what did Naomi know about the island? She described the mission as a high risk covert op in unstable territory.
Daniel seems bipolar, Miles is a smug headcase ghosthunter, Frank is a drunken seedy Magnum PI and Charlotte is an irritating anthropologist. Why were this lot chosen to go on the island? Why are they packing guns and gasmasks?
Unanswered Questions:
Who is the Ben's man on the freighter? Is it Michael? Ben gave Michael very specific directions, did he set Michael up?
What is the wreckage doing on the ocean floor? Is it fake? Planted?
Why is the helicopter ride in so bumpy?
Why did Naomi say she was working for Penny? Why did she have the photo?
How do the freighter people know about Ben? How do they have his photo? He's never been off the island since childhood, allegedly. Do the freighter people have a spy on the island?
Ben doesn't know what the monster is? Did Richard or Jacob never tell him?
Locke's hostage may be the key to getting off the island. Meanwhile flashforwards show Sayid has taken an unexpected path. Very good, Season 4 just keeps getting better.
Highlights:
My mother liked the beefcake shots of Sayid.
The helicopter leaving craphole island. Dramatic looking but not as emotional as the raft launching back in season 1. Because the raft launching was hopeful, this is just ominous.
Comments:
Did Sayid never look up Nadia?
Where did Jacob's cabin go?
Elsa had horseteeth.
Poor Jack is all subdued now. His dramatic rescue isn't working out how he thought.
Elsa's opera getup of cold waved hair and a burnt umber dress was very nice.
Ben's secret hidey hole was very Enid Blyton. What is up with the passports and currency though?
Mention of Sayid's necksnapping abilities.
Even 'Lost' can't escape the tv trope of L shaped sheets.
Sayid is following a list now. Mmmm.
So the helicopter has to follow the exact path out as it did coming in. Mmmm. A tie-in to Ben's directions to Michel on the boat?
Ben's a vet now?
Unanswered Questions:
Who is the RC mentioned on Naomi's bracelet?
Why did Naomi and Elsa have identical bracelets?
Why was golf course guy scared when he learnt who Sayid was?
WTF is up with the 31 minute time difference between the freighter and the island?
Who were Elsa and her boss? Dharma? Or something else?
Where was hotel security when Elsa and Sayid were shooting each other?
Why are Sayid and Ben in cahoots? Who are they killing? Who are they protecting? What went so horribly wrong with the freighter people? What happened to the lostaways and the Others on the island?
Two Tribes:
Team Locke: Kate, Miles.
Team Jack: Desmond, Charlotte.
04: Eggtown
Guest Starring: Beth Broderick and Susan Gibney ('Star Trek: The Next Generation', 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine')
"She's the very definition of a flight risk."
"You just totally Scooby-Dooed me didn't you?"
"You're not welcome here."
Locke wants answers from Miles. Meanwhile Miles tries to blackmail Ben and Kate wants answers from Miles. Flashforwards show Kate on trial for her litany of crimes and her concern for her son who isn't her son at all. A goodish episode.
Highlights:
Kate's swank sunglasses in the flash-forward.
Jack looks hot in his suit.
Locke, Miles and the grenade.
Comments:
What are the lostaways eating?
Kate's crimes include: fraud, arson, assault, murder, grand theft, grand theft auto etc. What about Tom's death? Was she charged in relation to that?
The Oceanic 6 have the most recognisable faces in the America, mmmmmmm.
Where did The Other's boathouse come from?
Miles is a snot. He annoys more then Shannon, Boone and Ana-Lucia combined.
It's kind of creepy how Locke's followers are making themselves comfy in Otherville.
The freighter receptionist claims the helicopter hasn't shown up. Is she lying or what?
Where did Locke get the grenade?
Cut your damn hair Sawyer.
Why does Kate's lawyer say a jury would never convict her? A jury convicted Patty Hearst!
I presume Kate's upper-middle class suburban home and live in nanny are paid for via her settlement with Oceanic. So why isn't she facing any civil lawsuits from any of her victims? Like Kevin or Tom's family?
Unanswered Questions:
How is Diane still alive?
What about Kate's husband Kevin?
Why does Jack lie about the events after the crash? Why did he say the plane crashed in the water? Why did he say only 8 people survived the crash? Why did Kate's lawyer say she nearly starved to death on the island?
Where are Richard and The Others? Aren't Miles and co interested in them?
How does Ben know about Mile?
Who is Miles working for? Why are they looking for Ben? Why does Miles want 3.2 million?
Who is Ben and what can he do?
When did Kate pierce her ears in the flash-forward?
Why wasn't Aaron taken into foster care?
Why doesn't Jack want to see Aaron?
Why is Kate raising Aaron and claiming he is her son? Wouldn't the courts or cops wonder about Aaron's age and the fact she wasn't pregnant at the time of the crash? (editor note: and they'd know she wasn't pregnant how?) What happened to Claire?
05: The Constant
Guest Starring: Alan Dale and Fisher Stevens ('Early Edition')
"Don't go trying to call Baghdad."
"Where is he?"
"In a body bag."
"I know about the island."
Sayid and Desmond arrive on the freighter only to learn that not only are the freighter people rude and hostile but Desmond's consciousness is travelling in time from 2004 to 1996. Meanwhile Faraday and Charlotte continue to be shifty and demonstrate that Locke may have been right all along. An okay episode but it is becoming ever clearer that Jack really shouldn't have made that phone call.
Highlights:
The helicopter flying over the beautiful blue sea to land on the freighter.
The Black Rock painting!
The diary of the first mate of the Black Rock!
Penny and Desmond reunite.
Comments:
That's an amateur hour map.
Desmond's 1996 travails in the Royal Scots Regiment is very 'Full Metal Jacket'. Is that how he ended up in the military prison?
The freighter doctor exudes John Malkovich like creepiness.
The setting for 'Oxford' is where Charlie went to confession in season 1 and where Desmond was a monk in season 3.
1996 Faraday is a jerk and what was with his Flash Gordon like device that killed poor Eloise?
Who sabotaged the equipment? Who opened the door? Was it Ben's man on the boat?
Is the Black Rock diary the reason Penny and her foul father know about the island?
What is in that dairy?
Has Penny died her hair?
How did Sayid dial from the ship to London without any codes?
WTF was Faraday's diary entry about?
06: The Other Woman
Guest Starring: Alan Dale and Andrea Roth ('The Club', 'Robocop: The Series')
"It's very stressful being an Other."
"If my people still wanted me John they would have stormed this camp long ago."
Juliet is contacted by Harper (Roth) who is one of the Others. Harper tells Juliet Ben wants her to stop Charlotte and Daniel from carrying out their mission at The Tempest hatch. Meanwhile Locke demands answers from Ben and answers are given. At this point, there are now so many people running around on the island I am amazed it doesn't hold its own Democratic primary.
Highlights:
Jack getting rained on. Nice.
Juliet finding Goodwin after Ana-Lucia turned him into a kebab.
Comments:
Flashback Juliet and her hooker hair extensions.
The whispers are back.
Claire isn't mourning Charlie much.
Locke and his gang are acting like Others now.
Note how many times the phrase 'hostile' was used in this episode.
Did Juliet have no qualms about sleeping with Harper's husband?
Charles Widmore is behind the freighter people.
Goodwin was set up by Ben.
Michael is Ben's man on the boat, I'm convinced of that.
Unanswered Questions:
Where did Charlotte and Ben get the map?
If Charlotte and Daniel are benign, why are they so sneaky and violent?
Is Miles still holding onto that grenade?
How is Harper in touch with Ben?
Where has the jungle monster gone?
How did Harper vanish? Was she a vision?
Who does Juliet look like besides Jack's ex-wife?
Ben says his people have rejected him (he may be lying) but where are Harper, Richard and the rest of the Others hiding?
Why did Juliet have no problem with abducting crash surviours?
What the hell sort of people set up deadly gas emitters on an island?
"Why would Juliet lie about that?"
"Force of habit?"
"I will hunt you down and rip your head off!"
"Where exactly does one come across 324 dead bodies?"
Sun does not trust the freighter people and plans to move to Locke's camp as Juliet frantically tries to stop her. On the freighter Sayid and Desmond realise the boat people are suffering from extreme cabin fever and then they encounter Ben's man on the boat, Michael. Meanwhile a flash-forward shows Sun give birth to her daughter Ji Yeon and then she, her daughter and Hurley visit Jin's grave. Another okay episode.
Highlights:
Sun seemed to be watching Nikki's episode of 'Expose' on her tv in Korea.
Jin's reaction the panda thief.
Sun slapping Juliet after she told Jin about Sun's adultery.
The freighter Capitan wondering who could have the power and resources to stage the undersea wreckage of Flight 815.
Comments:
Why was boat person Gina acting so weird? Why have the boat people been killing themselves?
Daniel needs a damn good trashing as he admits they don't intend to rescue the lostaways.
What was the point of Jin's flashback?
Juliet's clavicle bone is on full display, eat something woman!
Where did that fishing boat Jin and Bernard were bonding on come from? Is that Karl's boat?
Who is banging on the pipes on the freighter?
How do the boat people not know who Michael is? They know who Desmond is.
"Can you imagine what would happen if we found some of those people alive?"
Sayid demands Michael explain what happened to him after he left the island and how he ended up on the freighter. Michael explains, basically his life has sucked since he murdered and betrayed his way off the island. Meanwhile Miles and Ben spills some secrets and Karl and Danielle are killed off. Getting back to civilisation really didn't work out for Michael, cruel irony and his former lostawsys aren't happy to see him. This was a goodish episode.
Highlights:
Michael's visions of Libby,
Michael pawns Jin's watch for a gun.
Tom's creepy version of how Widmore faked the wreckage (dug up a graveyard, bought an old 747 and dropped it in the ocean).
Comments:
So Richard isn't the only Other who can travel back and forth, Tom can too.
Michael told Walt that he murdered Ana-Lucia and Libby, Walt took it about as well as expected.
Why was no-one suspicious of 'Kevin' and his big ass crate?
The captain didn't look surprised when Sayid unmasked 'Kevin'
Unanswered Questions:
Why is Alex's hair so poufy?
What is The Temple and why can only The Others go there?
How the hell did Michael explain he and Walt surviving Flight 815 to his mother?
How did Tom get to NY?
What did Tom mean by saying that only some of The Others can travel back and forth?
Who did fake the wreckage?
How is Tom paying for the penthouse, room service and male escort?
Is Danielle dead?
Who is shooting? Did The Others rebel or is it more of the freighter people?
"Right now, I need you to tell me what's going on!"
"I think the technical term is shock and awe."
"I know who you are boy, what you are. I know that everything you have, you took from me."
"That island's mine Benjamin. It always was. It will be again."
"But you'll never find it."
The Freighter's mercenaries invade the island and kill Alex. Ben unleashes the smoke monster on them. The Team Locke members who aren't dead or being held at gunpoint decide to head back to the beach. Meanwhile back at the beach a body washes ashore, the Freighter's big fat lying ways are exposed and Jack does an over-acted dramatic collapse. Meanwhile in 2005 an apparently time travelling Ben recruits Sayid to kill people and then he throws down the gauntlet to Widmore. This was good with a whole helping of WTF thrown in. Time travel, death and Ben and Widmore playing at super-villains with each other.
Highlights:
The shotgun in the piano seat.
Alex's death. Matter of fact and not the over-directed scene it would have been on something like 'CSI: Miami' with slow-motion, yelling, flocks of birds and a song by The Killers or Evanescence playing.
Claire's house blown up.
Hurley breaking the window.
Comments:
Sayid married Nadia. Shannon was just roadkill on the Sayid/Nadia love-train and Nadia was just roadkill in the Ben / Widmore pissing match. As was Elsa. Sayid better never have sex again.
Ben time travels?!?
Ben can control old smoky?!?!
What was the deal with the Freighter doctor's body.
Why haven't any of the lostaways beaten the Freighter people up yet?
Juliet has to operate on Jack. Claire sees her father and vanishes. Miles continues to be an enormous tool. In the flash-forward, Jack and Kate are happy until Jack visits Hurley and sees his father. Whereupon he starts swilling pills, booze and alienating Kate. A good episode.
Highlights:
The Lostaways are finally badgering the freighter people for answers.
Shirtless Jack.
Comments:
Poor Hurley.
Jack's bad choices in love continue.
When will someone just smack Miles?
Unanswered Questions:
Who buried Danielle and Karl?
Why do the lostaways have an unending supply of tarp?
Why did Jack get sick?
How did the mercenaries escape old smokey?
What about Kate's husband Kevin?
Did Juliet choose to stay behind too?
Does Jack know he is Aaron's uncle?
Where is Claire?
Is Christian Sheppard alive or dead?
Didn't Jack's hospital mind him shacking up with a convicted felon?
Locke finds Jacob's cabin and has an interesting chat. Murderous plotting is afoot on the freighter. And a Locke flashback reveals that Locke has a destiny and that Richard not only never ages but has a problem displaying actual human emotion. Good, weird but good. And Richard's back! Finally. Give Carbonell a contract and make him a regular already! Richard is a fascinating character.
Highlights:
Richard, he's scary.
Kid Locke's smoke monster drawing.
Claire in the cabin.
Ben and Hurley sharing an Apollo bar, hee.
Unanswered Question:
Horace said he'd been dead for 12 years. Time on the island is seriously messed up because the purge had to have happened longer than 12 years ago.
The doctor is alive and then he's killed and tossed off the boat. Freaky.
Locke really did come from the shallow end of the gene pool.
Locke didn't recognize Richard when they met again.
So who is the leader of the Others? Jacob? Richard?
Why did Horace have the blueprints to the cabin?
Why was Abbadon Locke's orderly? Why did Abbadon tell Locke to go on a walkabout?
Why was Claire not the slightest bit concerned about her child?
Why did Desmond tell Charlie that Claire and Aaron would get on a helicopter and be rescued? Did Desmond lie to Charlie to get himself off the island?
Who or what is Richard? He doesn't age and any display of emotion seems something he puts on for other people's benefit. Remember his interactions with Juliet, Locke and Ben back in season 3? TPTB need to do a Richard episode.
12: There's No Place Like Home, Part 1
Guest Starring: Nestor Carbonell, Michelle Forbes ('Prison Break', 'Razor'), Veronica Hamel ('Hill Street Blues') and Cheech Marin ('Nash Bridges')
"Ladies and gentlemen, the survivors of Oceanic 815."
"Is it possible there are any other survivors from the crash yet to be discovered?"
"We're going to move the island."
"Right and how're we going to do that?"
"Very carefully."
The Homecoming. Didn't we all think this would be how the show ended? With the plane ride home, the family reunions and the press conference about freak-o island? Flashforwards show the lying liars Oceanic 6 returning home except their homecoming is full of lies, deceit and a devastating revelation.
Meanwhile back on the island, the lostawsys are being slowly transported to the freighter. Richard ambushes Kate and Sayid in the jungle. Ben heads toward yet another hatch called The Orchid and Locke still plans to move the island, somehow overlooking the fact that there are TWO islands.
An excellent episode, best episode of Season 4 so far.
Highlights:
The press conference.
Jack learning Claire was/is his half-sister.
Richard and the Others ambush Kate and Sayid.
Comments:
Nadia's back.
Daniel taking the first people off the island was a definite call-back to the raft launching scene in 'Exodus, Part 1'.
It looks like Jin really is dead.
Mr Cluck's rebuilt.
The tackily themed birthday party.
Unanswered Questions:
Where is Hurley's brother Diego?
No parents or cops or federal marshals to greet Kate?
Kate could maybe get away with claiming to have been in her second trimester without anyone noticing while finally caught but wouldn't Aaron still be breast fed at this point? How is she feeding him? Why didn't anyone ask who the father is? Why didn't anyone ask how she got out of her shackles during a plane crash?
Why doesn't Daniel share info?
Why didn't Christian have a funeral before now?
Why are they lying about the crash?
Has Ben forgotten there are TWO islands?
Who is Ben signalling? Who replied?
Doesn't that raft need refuelling at some point?
How did Claire's mother come about a vegetative state coma with no ill effects whatsoever?
Why were the Others wearing their raggedy disguises?
