A terrifying low budget UK horror movie.
A group of animal rights activists free some monkeys from a horrific laboratory but the monkeys are infected with a rage virus and they turn on their liberators.
28 days later, Jim (Cillian Murphy - 'Batman Begins') wakes up in hospital after a coma, he's been locked in his ward and someone has slid the key under the door, he gets dressed and ventures out into an empty London. As he walks aimlessly, he sees evidence something has happened: the overturned bus, the papers screaming about 'Evacuation' and the fact someone has written 'The end is absolutely f##king nigh' on a church wall.
Then he encounter a horde of screaming raving people (and they aren't football hooligans) and runs for his life, luckily he is rescued by Mark and Selena. They tell him that about the virus that has over-run the country, how it turns people into insane savages just 20 seconds after infection, how the TV and radio have gone silent and how he is the only living person they've found in a long time.
Jim insists on going to his parent's house only to find them long dead of a suicide pact. They're clutching a childhood photo of him on which they've written 'Don't wake up'.
A spine chilling movie. The depiction of an empty London is wonderfully creepy and the hordes of Infected are unnerving (rats run from them).
They find two other survivors who have barricaded themselves into a tower block: Frank (Brendan Glesson) and his young daughter Hannah. Frank has barricaded the stairwell with shopping carts and if any Infected do make it past, he dons riot police gear and beats the hell out of them. Frank also owns a wind up radio and they learn of a safe haven near Manchester.
They make it to the safe haven, but not without loss, where they met Major Henry West (Christopher Eccleston - 'Doctor Who', 'The Second Coming') who has his own ideas about the answer to Infection and rebuilding. Jim also learns that the Infection may not have spread worldwide as everyone believes; their country may just be under quarantine.
Caught between the hordes of Infected and West's world-building agenda, Jim and the dwindling survivors face a bleak future either way.
A great movie.
