The Zombie Diaries (2007)

Reviewer - Rox Pebble

A low budget zombie movie that is a student film with pretensions and has the most misleading DVD cover since 'Reign of Fire'.

It's a collection of video diaries covering a zombie outbreak in the UK. It isn't explained who assembled these diaries or why and the plot makes less sense the more you dwell on the matter. It's like a group of film students read 'World War Z' and got inspired.

Diary 1: The Outbreak
"There are strange dead things running around!"

This diary is shot by a news-crew as hints of a mysterious worldwide virus are dropped. The news-crew drive into the countryside to interview a farmer who's just been ordered to cull all his poultry by order of the Government. But the farmer is nowhere to be found and the local village is strangely deserted and that their car has broken down, they decide to break in to the farm and wait for the owner to return, which seems like a good plan until they hear a scary noise from upstairs. Naturally they go investigate the scary noise, this sequence does have some tension but I kept being distracted that the leader of the news crew looks like Silent Bob of Jay & Silent Bob fame. They find a zombie and run screaming into the night. Diary 1 than abruptly ends. This was an okay segment.

Dairy 2: The Scavengers
"What a shame we don't live in a more gun friendly society."

This diary is shot by a different group. This threesome are apparently strangers who've banded together to survive the zombies. It's a month since the outbreak and they need food. So they head into an empty village to loot. There are newspapers all over the ground which in a zombie themed horror movie, like 'Resident Evil' or 'Day of the Dead', means the apocalypse has taken place. They hear a scary noise and yes, these group of eejets also decide to investigate the scary noise. The idea of keeping a lookout for zombies apparently never occurred to them. Zombies show up and they escape. Dairy 2 ends. Also an okay segment.

Diary 3 - 'The Survivors'
Dairy three centres on a new group of people hiding out in a farmhouse. This is where all decent watchability this movie has built up falls apart. More eejets go investigate the scary noise and it is revealed that one of the group is keeping something nasty in a nearby barn. Something that ties in with Diary 1. Things rapidly fall apart for this group in a flurry of bad acting.

Diary 1 and 3 are unexpectedly tied together. And there is a final scene with some soldiers that doesn't make any logical or narrative sense at all.

It's okay but the 'plot' makes no sense, there are massive plot and logic holes but zombie fans may enjoy it. If they can overlook the minuscule budget and the fact that not one single person in this film (even the damn zombies) can act.

The DVD has a trailer for another 'Direct to DVD' horror movie, 'The Butcher', which looks suitably cheesyily good.
