Another comedy sitcom from Dawn French ('Girls on Top', 'Let Them Eat Cake' and 'Happy Families'). This show takes a blackly comedic look at murder. Murder most horrid.
Episode 1: The Case Of The Missing
Guest Starring: Timothy Spall
"He was drawing attention to our activities."
"Not as much as he is swinging over the River Bam with his trousers at half mast and a chest full of trowels."
The Masons murder a man under a bridge in broad daylight in front of a bus full of people. So to ensure they get away with it they set a traffic PC to investigate. PC Softly (French) is so flummoxed by the conspiracy she ends up arresting herself for the crime. A goodish start, it pays homage to 'Juliet Bravo' and every Mason conspiracy book.
Episode 2: The Girl From Ipanema
Guest Starring: Jane Asher
"Avarice and revenge. The ugliest coupling since Sarah Brightman and Andrew Lloyd-Webber."
"One: we need a new kettle. Two: put my wife's body in the Range Rover."
Maria (French) arrives from Brazil to be a maid to the vile Howling family. She is treated as a skivvy and when she learns that they own the gold mine that has devastated her village with pollution and cholera, well they've got to go. Mrs Howling is bumped off, Maria becomes the new Mrs Howling and on the wedding night Mr Howling dies. Now Maria has a new South American maid of her own to boss around.
Episode 3: He Died A Death
Guest Starring: Ben Miller ('Primeval', 'Moving Wallpaper') and Tony Slattery
"It's a long walk from tinsel town to bummer alley and I took a cab!"
A bad play entitled 'The Catflap' is the setting for a tale of luvvie rivalry and murder. Washed up soap-star Judy (French) is enraged when her co-star Tony (Slattery) announces he is quitting to be the star of a washing powder ad. Then at the matinee performance, Tony is murdered. Whodunit? Well a visiting police troop have a very good idea: "Hands up foreign chummy. I arrest you on suspicion of being IRISH!"
Good. The "I arrest you on suspicion of being Irish" line is a classic.
Episode 4: A Determined Woman
Guest Starring: Jim Broadbent and Kathy Burke
Scientist Rita (French) kills her husband in a fit of temper. After five years in jail she gets out and vows to fix things by building a time machine in her garage. However it all goes horribly wrong as she creates the situation that led to the murder and ends up trapped in an inescapable time loop. The weakest episode of series 1.
Episode 5: Murder At Tea Time
Guest Starring: Dexter Fletcher ('Hotel Babylon', 'Doom', 'Press Gang')
A vicious take on 'Blue Peter'. Bunty (French) is a much adored star of kiddies tv show Write Away but she is being upstaged by her new and much younger co-host Colin (Fletcher). So Bunty sets out to sabotage Colin but retribution is waiting for Bunty is the form of a somewhat disturbed schoolboy viewer who is obsessed with getting his gold Write Away badge.
Episode 6: Mrs Hat And Mrs Red
Frumpy nobody Mrs Katie Hatcliffe (French) sees the rich bitchy Mrs Sonya Redfern (French) in the supermarket one day. The two woman are identical. An intrigued Mrs Hatcliffe follows Mrs Redfern home. Mrs Red walks out on her family for her roided up lover. So Mrs Hat climbs in the window and takes over Mrs Red's life, family, friends and husband. Everyone's happy until one day Mrs Red pays a visit looking for her gold card.
